Kim Baker: Playing Music. Doing Some Good.

By Paul Freeman For The Daily News

For Montara singer-songwriter Kim Baker, her career in music can be measured by how well it serves her community. Fulfillment comes from using her art to help fund worthy organizations. Baker plays Redwood City's Club Fox on Friday, sharing the bill with another very gifted Peninsula performer, Ruth Gerson. The concert is to benefit The St. Francis Center in Redwood City.

"I guess I take after my mom," Baker said. "She's always been involved in something. When I was growing up, she was a volunteer in hospital emergency rooms. When I was in college, she got involved in a Southern California church and, through the church, has done a lot of counseling. This church is globally involved in charitable work." Baker and her mother Carolyn are in the process of setting up their own charitable foundation, Angels of Hope. Baker's plans crystallized when she met Bill Somerville of Philanthropic Ventures Foundation. He's the author of "Grassroots Philanthropy." She appreciated his hands-on approach. "His foundation kind of became a model for me," she said. Somerville took her into the community, visiting several of the places his company helps to fund on the Peninsula. The first was the St. Francis Center. "I was just blown away by this amazing place," Baker said.

"It's this beautiful space that they built from the ground up. There's a classroom on the top. Downstairs they put bags of food together for people in the community. There's a clothing room where people can, once a month, get a bag of clothing. They have 24 units of low-income housing. "It's the most efficiently run thing I've ever seen. Sister Christina (Heltsley), who runs it, is incredible. And there are all of these dedicated volunteers." What Baker saw in the classroom especially impressed her. "The teacher's in the middle of teaching these cute little kids and she suddenly said, 'Oh, look, Bill is here!' They saw him and all knew who he was and shouted, 'Uncle Bill! Uncle Bill!' And they got up and came running towards them with their big smiles. It was a moment I'll never forget. The look on their faces was so much love for this person who had made this center for them. I'm like, 'Man, I've got to do this.'"

In addition to writing and performing music, Baker operates her own label, Earthwater Records. Now she's establishing a charitable foundation. How does she juggle all of these pursuits? "It's really hard, but it's good. I have to be really organized with my time. I have my little Macbook and my iPhone and I just carve out things very carefully. I'll say, these days, during these hours, I'll rehearse. On these days, I'll promote the concert. And so on. I've developed a system now where everything is really structured. I know there's only one of me, but, hopefully, eventually there will be more people involved," she said, laughing.

Her role as community activist feeds Baker's creative side. "The more I think about things outside of myself, the more inspired I am in general, as a human being, and that's reflected in my music. And my music has headed more and more in that direction, instead of being just all about me. "I've written a lot of songs over the years, and when I was putting together the set list for this Club Fox show, I found that I was picking the ones that speak to me about these types of things, like caring about things that are hopeful, inspirational, uplifting, whatever you want to call it. I find myself more pulled towards those songs. And as I'm writing my newer songs, I feel like I'm going more in that direction, as opposed to just relationships and things like that."

Growing up in Southern California, Baker admired artists who reflected social and political awareness. "The biggest influence, when I first got into music, was The Indigo Girls. I saw one of their videos and their approach was unique, different from any other video I had seen. I went to the library and looked them up and there was all this stuff about how interested they were in the world and the community and peace and activism. And it just got me. It really spoke to me. I was maybe 15."
She earned a music degree at Oakland's Mills College. She interned at Polygram, learning the nuts and bolts of the industry, prior to founding her own label. As a performer, she has built a loyal fan base.

Baker is well into the process of recording an album, a follow-up to her outstanding collection of folk-rock songs, "Field of Plenty." The new one will be more piano-oriented, rather than guitar-driven. She says the music will have a softer quality to it. She hopes to have it in release in time for summer and fall regional tours.

"Being able to use music to have a positive impact on the community, for me, that's an incredible source of joy."

Kim Baker ~ July 2010 Newsletter - July 14, 2010

Greetings everyone!

LILITH FAIR UPDATE:

First and foremost, I want to thank all of you for your support surrounding the Lilith Fair voting process last month. There were close to 600 artists competing for one spot in our region, and although I didn't make it to the very top of the list, I am deeply grateful that I rose so far up in the ranking throughout the voting process. I SO appreciated all of your support! By the way, if there is anyone out there who voted and didn't receive their free download of my song "Rapture," please let me know immediately so that I can make sure it gets out to you. We received a ton of emails and I want to make sure that no one was missed in the process.

LITTLE FOX THEATER RE-OPENING THIS MONTH:

I am very excited about the Little Fox Theater reopening at the end of this month. It looks like it is going to be re-named "Club Fox." I went by there personally a few days ago, and they were completely re-doing the inside. They were painting the walls and rebuilding the stage from scratch. It was exciting to see all of that activity going on after months of it being closed, and wondering whether or not if it would ever re-open again. In any case, I am SO looking forward to playing there again with my band once it is all done!! I will keep you posted as things progress.

BRAND NEW SONGS:

Since I haven't been performing live as much recently, I have been writing and fine-tuning a lot of new songs. Right now I have six new songs that I am working on, as well as the ten I have already recorded for the Waterfall CD (most of which have not been released to you all yet). I'd like to pick the top 12 songs (out of those 16) for the finalized CD. I am thinking about posting some live "living room" performances of the different songs via YouTube. It would be great to get your feedback about which songs should make the cut on the final CD.

LOCAL 'WOMEN WHO ROCK' CONCERT:

Right now I am also working on putting together a live concert with some of my other female artist friends. I thought it would be fun to do our own Local Lilith Fair type of concert, and in the process, raise some money for a worthy cause (via the new non-profit organization I have been working on these past months). If you're interested in participating in, or helping to promote this event, please send a note to: info@kimbaker.com. Would love to have you involved!

FACEBOOK MUSIC PAGE:

If you are on Facebook, please hook up with me, so that we can stay in touch on-line. I have mostly been using Facebook these days in order to stay in touch with friends and fans (rather than MySpace, ReverbNation or Twitter). It seems to be the easiest way for me to stay connected with y'all. :) Thank you again for all of your continued support!!

Kim Baker ~ December 2009 Newsletter - December 21, 2009

Hello, everyone!

I hope that this note finds you well and enjoying the holiday season! I for one procrastinated on my shopping until the very last minute and decided to do it all in one day! :) Can anyone out there relate to that feeling!? In honor of the holiday season, this month I have chosen to digitally release my song "YOU BRING ME PEACE." Someone very dear to my heart reminded me about this song last week and I decided that it would be a perfect choice for my December release. You can check it out on iTunes at the following link. It is song #14.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/field-of-plenty/id260643007
I wrote this song a few years back after I had been robbed of most of my musical equipment. I was very upset about the situation and was having a hard time letting go of my hurt, until one morning when I felt covered with a sense of peace. It was right after I had been praying and meditating about what had just happened. I immediately picked up my guitar and wrote this song, and every time after that, when I felt myself becoming anxious about losing my favorite guitar, or other equipment, I would play this song and remember what was truly important ~ the peace which exists within all of our hearts at all times. We just have to become still enough to feel it. I am grateful now that I had that experience, and I hope that this song brings you a sense of peace during this holiday season.

YOU BRING ME PEACE
Words and music by Kim Baker
http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/field-of-plenty/id260643007
You bring me flowers, simplicity
You bring me an endless, sense of peace
You bring me passion, and poetry
You bring me closer, to who I'm supposed to be

So pull me close
Feel me breath
Hold my tears
And bring me peace

I bring you laughter, serenity
I bring you quiet thoughts, and restless sleep
I bring this love, I bring this release
And quiet words, that only you can see

So pull me close
Feel me breath
Hold my tears
Bring me peace

You bring me peace
You bring me peace
Bring us peace...

Kim Baker ~ November 2009 Newsletter (Song Release: Rapture) - November 21, 2009

Hello, everyone,

I hope that this note finds you well. It has been a little while since my last newsletter. I have been quite busy going through, what I would like to call, my very own head-to-toe transformation process. :) Given what has been going on in the world, I am sure that many of you have also been going through your own transformations as well. I would love to hear from you.

In musical news, I have been continuing to work on my CD entitled "Waterfall." The whole process has evolved over the past months, and I have decided to start releasing one song individually each month (via digital download, and as a part of these monthly newsletters). Each month I will tell the story of what inspired that particular song, as well as include a link where you can listen to and download the song (in CD quality format of course)! :)

RAPTURE - November 2009 release
http://kimbaker.argoarts.com/rapture.php
This month's song is entitled "Rapture." This song is particularly close to my heart because it is the first song that I wrote on the piano (rather than the guitar). I was listening to some of Sting's music at the time I wrote this and was thinking about a friend of mine who means a great deal to me. The theme of the song is overcoming the wounds of our past, in order to embrace the beau ty of our present and of our future. I was thinking about my friend and how we had both overcome some very difficult situations in our growing up process, and how rising above those situations has made us both strong and perseverant, as well as a bit overly protective of our hearts too. It has always been my hope that as I grow older, I will be able to open my heart even wider, so that I can fully express all of who I am in this life, and I hope this for my friend, and everyone else, as well. "Rapture" is the place we come to once we have laid down all of our hurts and finally, fully opened our hearts as far as they can go.

I'd like to express my deep gratitude to Sheryl Melbane (drums), Vicky Grossi (violin), Laura Boytz (cello) and Jennifer Daniels (vocals), for lending their wonderful musical talent to this song, as well as to Cookie Marenco for engineering and producing it. You can read the lyrics, listen to a clip of the song, and download it, all by going here: http://kimbaker.argoarts.com/rapture.php
On one final note, please mark your calendars for January 31, 2010 as my band and I will be headlining another show at the Little Fox Theater in Redwood City. We are still ironing out all of the specific details, but I will be sure to keep you posted. We are also planning a joint show with "Blame Sally," another wonderful female centered group based here in the Bay Area. I am really looking forward to that concert as well!

Until next month's newsletter and song release, I hope that you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving. There are so many things for us to be grateful for this Thanksgiving! I think that my list is about a mile long. If you have a moment, please drop me a line. I would love to hear how you are doing.

All the best,

~Kim

Kim Baker "Waterfall" Single Available as a CD Quality Download - May 4, 2009

∞ ∞ ∞

The story behind the song:

I am so thrilled about how well this song was captured in the recording studio. This song means a great deal to me on a personal level. It all started with an incredibly powerful dream that I had one morning out of the blue. I was literally awakened from a deep sleep with a feeling of love and longing which filled my entire body. I woke up with tears in my eyes. It was such a rare and exquisite moment for me. I immediately got up from the bed and stumbled downstairs to the piano to see if I could capture some of what I was feeling on the piano and with my voice. I wrote the song in about an hour, in that half awake, half asleep state, and when I was finished I actually thought that I would never record it because it was so ethereal. I'm so glad that I changed my mind! :) In a larger sense, this song makes me think about how we should all be constantly looking for those moments in our life that are filled with that deep sense of joy and love. There is so much suffering going on in the world right now, and when I listen to this song, I am constantly reminded that there is a force of love that is all around us, all of the time, and that all we need to do is close our eyes, open our hearts and let it all in!

I would personally like to thank Cookie Marenco, my brilliant producer/engineer and friend, for helping me capture this song in the studio. Cookie - I am so proud of the fact that we recorded this completely on analog tape and that I got to use your beautiful Steinway piano in the process! You amaze me! I would also like to thank Jennifer Daniels (my dear friend and fellow singer-songwriter) for lending her beautiful voice to this project as well. Jennifer - I am so deeply grateful for your talent, willingness and friendship! Your vocal parts give me the chills every time I hear them. :) Thank you, thank you, thank you!! And last but not least, a big thanks to all of the additional musicians who contributed to the song: Brain (drums), Vicky Grossi (on bass and viola), and Sheryl Melbane (additional drums). I am so grateful that I am able to share this song with all of you, my dearest friends and supporters. Thank you for listening!

Waterfall Lyrics:

You came to me
In a dream
Whispering that
You would wait for me
By the waterfall
And then you paused
My heart began to pound
Until it was the only sound
I could hear...

Oh to be near you
Oh to be near you
Oh to be near you
Oh to be near you

And then you said
Will you wait for me?
Oh sweet ecstasy
So strong, so pure
It woke me up like a bolt
And I was sure
It is you who I love
It is you who I love

Oh to be near you
Oh to be near you
Oh to be near you
Oh to be near you

And even though it makes no sense
I will wait for you
By the water's edge
Behind its stream
And there I will kiss you
Feel the water on your skin
And to your every wish, give in
(Oh...your every wish give in)

Oh to be near you
Oh to be near you
Oh to be near you
Oh to be near you

(-Instrumental-)

It is you who I love
It is you who I love
Oh to be near you
Oh to be near you

Live at the Little Fox ~ Waterfall Video - February 20, 2009

Below is a video a fan of mine created from my show at the Little Fox Theater in Redwood City, CA on October 9th. It is my new piano song entitled "Waterfall":

Happy New Year and Thanks! - January 2, 2009

Hello, everyone!

I just wanted to drop you all a quick line and say Happy New Year. I
also wanted to say thanks so much for your support in 2008. It was
such a wonderful year and I deeply appreciate all of you who came out
to the shows, bought CDs, wrote articles about the shows, made
donations to the different benefit organizations, etc..

I am most grateful for the concerts that we did at the Little Fox
Theater in March and October, as well as the show we did at the
Phoenix Hotel in June, all of which benefited various charity
organizations. If you weren't able to make it for some reason, you
can view some of the YouTube videos from those shows at the link
below:

Speaking of which, we will be releasing a "Live at the Little Fox"
DVD in March of 2009, so I will be sure to keep you all up to date
about that too. In the meantime, I will be donating 20% of all
on-line CD sales in January and February to Larkin Street Youth
Services. So, if you weren't able to attend the last benefit show,
you can still give to a very worthy cause by following the link below:

http://cdbaby.com/all/kimbaker
Thank you! I also wanted to thank Karen Soo Hoo, Christy Bryce and
Jennifer Daniels again for joining me at those benefit shows. It
meant a lot to me to be able to share those experiences with you guys!
Jennifer was able to stop by the recording studio while she was here
on tour and sang some beautiful background parts on my song
"Waterfall." I am really looking forward to releasing that one as a
single in the very near future.

Also, I wanted to say a special thanks again to Paul Freeman from the
Palo Alto Daily for writing this article below about the Little Fox
show in October, as well as channel 7 news for covering the event on
the 11pm news that night! It meant so much to me that the kids from
Larkin Street Youth Services got so much media attention!

Again, thank you again for all of your support in 2008. I look
forward to sharing my new "Waterfall" CD with all of you in 2009. I

Hello, everyone!

I hope that this note finds you well! :) I am writing to tell you

Hotel in San Francisco. I am going to be co-headlining with my dear
friend, and stellar singer-songwriter, Jennifer Daniels from
Chattanooga, TN. The event, entitled "Women Rock the Phoenix Hotel,"
will be benefiting the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation
in San Francisco.

I am very excited about this show for many reasons. First of all,
it's a benefit for a great cause! You can read all about the TNDC at:
http://www.tndc.org. Second of all, my friend Jennifer will be

Kim Baker Spring 2007 Newsletter - February 5, 2007

Hello, everyone,

I hope that 2007 is treating you all well so far! This will be a
brief newsletter, as I only have a few things to report. :) The big
news is that this Sunday, February 11th, I will be attending the
Grammy Awards for the first time in my life, so I am super excited
about that. I am heading down to LA with my good friend Janelle, and
we are going to turn it into a Grammy extravaganza weekend! I am sure
that I'll have some very interesting pictures and stories for the next
newsletter! :) I'm really excited about getting to see lots of
incredible artists perform, especially The Police, who are reuniting
just for the show. For more information, check out:
http://www.grammys.com
Other than the Grammys, I've been busy working on polishing up
several of my newest songs, so that I can get into the studio and
record them. If you're interested in reading the lyrics, I have them
up on my website at: http://www.kimbaker.com/music-group-35.html. I
had a great time at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley recently with
Australian greats Bluehouse. They are currently gearing up for a
tour with Tommy Emmanuel in Holland. You can read more about them
at: http://www.bluehouse.net. They are both incredible ladies! Oh,
and in other music news, I am so very proud of my friend Jennifer
Daniels, who was recently featured on TBS's Storyline. You can check
her out at:
http://tbsstoryline.com/video/ss_jen_daniels_love_me_lg.html
Well, I think that's about it in the music news department! :) I
hope that this note finds you and your families well.

All the best,
~Kim

A recent interview with Kim Baker - November 8, 2006

Kim Baker began playing music at age 8, and by the time she was in high school, started writing songs. While attending Mills College, she split her time between studying music on the weekdays, and recording music on the weekends, on a 4 track recorder in her dorm room. Her first live performances took place on the Mills campus, and when she graduated, she immediately began her career in music. Shortly after graduation, Kim decided to launch her own record label, Earthwater Records.

Since founding Earthwater Records, Kim has released six CD's. In 1996 she released a debut album entitled simply "Kim Baker." In 1998, she released "On Her Dream" and embarked on a 36 state tour across the United States. In 2000, she returned to the Bay Area to release "Keep On" and in 2002, she released the critically acclaimed album "Rising Tide" (featuring the driving force of world-renowned drummer Kenny Aronoff). In 2004, she released the "The Little Fox Theater CD Sampler." And in 2006, she released "The Expression Sessions" with her full band, Rising Tide.

"One of the greatest joys I've had as an artist over the last several years has been the ability to have creative control over my art," says Baker. "I am deeply grateful for every moment of it." Baker is currently polishing up songs for her seventh CD on the Earthwater label, which will be stretching her into a completely new direction. "The CD will include five new songs I recently wrote on the piano, which is a bit of a departure from my folk-rock, acoustic guitar rooted, songs. I'm really excited about starting to write songs on the piano, because it was my primary instrument growing up, and I feel a deep connection with it."

"The new piano songs are entitled: Rapture, Before, Fire Within, Reach Out, and Without a Trace. The song I am feeling most connected with right now is "Before" because it came from a place of pure love. I hardly remember writing it actually. I remember my hands moving, and scribbling on a piece of paper over a period of about 5 hours, but that's about it. The next day, I thought 'Wow, where on earth did that come from?!'"

"Before" will be released as a CD single on the Earthwater label in the Spring of 2007. "I am hoping to gain some radio attention from this song, which will spur momentum for a new full length album later in the year. Right now, I'm focusing on performing at theaters throughout the Bay Area, and am considering purchasing a theater of my own, where I can promote concerts. I have artist friends from all over the country who I would like to help promote here in the Bay Area. I have always wanted to own my own theater, and would consider working with a partner, if I could find the right person."

Kim Baker November 2006 Newsletter - November 7, 2006

Hello, everyone,

I just wanted to remind you all that I will be performing at the Freight & Salvage Coffee House with Australian greats "Bluehouse" on Sunday, November 26th at 8pm. Here are all of the specific details about the show:

Freight & Salvage Coffee House
http://www.thefreight.org Sunday, November 26th - 8pm (doors at 7:30pm)
with Bluehouse: http://www.bluehouse.net 1111 Addison Street

If you'd like to buy advanced tickets, please visit:
http://www.freightandsalvage.org/2006/0611-november/info_061126.html
And here's a little more information about Bluehouse:
--
One of Australia's premier live music acts, Bluehouse lights up the stage with their wicked humor, hot guitar and bass, fabulous songwriting, and gorgeous harmony singing. Since joining up a decade ago in a Melbourne pub, Jacqi Walter and Bernadette Carroll have gained attention and a devoted fan following in Australia and Britain -- and if recent Freight appearances are any indication, they've got a burgeoning flock of admirers in the Bay Area as well.

Bluehouse may win hearts with their hilarious stage antics and heartfelt songs, but the centerpiece of the duo's performances is without question the achingly beautiful harmonies they bring to bear on their unique blend of jazz, blues, soul, and rootsy pop, which have led to many comparisons with the Indigo Girls. Impressively, the duo managed to fund the production of their first two albums, including their most recent, big, entirely through advance mail-order sales. Come find out why!
--
I so hope that you all can make it! It'll be a great post-Thanksgiving treat!

See you at the shows!
Thanks,
~Kim

Kim Baker October 2006 Newsletter - October 11, 2006

So, it is pumpkin time again in my little town of Half Moon Bay.
There are pumpkins growing on all of the farms surrounding my house,
and there is a feeling of magic in the air. This weekend is the
official "Pumpkin Festival," when thousands of people descend upon
the normally sleepy, laid back coastside to partake in all of the
festivities. It should be a great time! In case you are looking for
something fun to do after all of the festivities have winded down, I
wanted to remind you about the show I'm performing in at the Hotel
Utah at 7pm on Sunday night. It will be a Nashville-style songwriter
in the round set-up and I am honored to be sharing the stage with
Janelle, Trevor and Todd.

Then, in November (the Sunday after Thanksgiving) I will be
performing in another show, this time at the historic Freight &
Salvage Coffee House in Berkeley. I will be opening for Bluehouse,
an incredible duo from Australia:

Freight & Salvage Coffee House
http://www.thefreight.org Sunday, November 26th - 8pm (doors at 7:30pm)

tickets, please visit:
http://www.freightandsalvage.org/2006/0611-november/info_061126.html
Here's a little history on the Freight (for those of you who aren't
familiar with it). This is a paragraph from the "about" page on
their website:

"By 1972 the Freight was the hub of a growing folk and old time music
scene so remarkable that traditional Appalachian folk performer, Mike
Seeger, documented it with the album Berkeley Farms (Folkways). At
the same time, the Freight welcomed new and experimental music. When
mandolin player David Grisman created his dawg blend of bluegrass and
jazz, he brought his ensembles to the Freight to develop the new
approach. As women's music broke out of its underground confines, the
Freight welcomed Teresa Trull, Meg Christian, and Cris Williamson.
Delia Bell and Bill Grant brought in a band of Nashville heavyweights
to play a mixture of bluegrass, acoustic country, and blues that has
become known as americana and alt-country."

I'm really looking forward to both of these shows and hope to see you
there!

In other news, if you're on MySpace.com, please stop by my page for a
visit. I just uploaded two new songs from The Expression Sessions CD
("Pray to the Rain" and "A Brighter Day"), which will finally be
released this Christmas (thank you so much for your patience):
http://www.myspace.com/kimbakermusic. By the way, if you're looking
for another great album to buy this Christmas, I highly recommend "A
Thrill of Hope" by Jennifer Daniels. You can read more about it on

Thank you all for your continued support!

I'll see you at the shows!
